Launching Nordic Filmmakers

Launching Nordic Filmmakers

We say Nordic because we are Nordic, in the sense that this isn't just Oslo or Bergen. This site will focus on voices from across Norway, with international ambition.

What is “nordic — filmmakers”?

It's bold to claim the title Nordic Filmmakers. And honestly, it's strange it wasn't taken already. If you've joined our Discord, you already know the name. If not, let us explain.

When we started Oslo Filmmakers, "we" was "one." An Instagram account intended to promote filmmaker hangouts in Oslo. One hangout led to the next, and slowly a small community grew around it. The last one, nearly 90 people showed up.

That confirmed something was happening.

So few became many. And we became a group of people putting energy and time into building something bigger. And now we're launching it.

nordic — filmmakers

nordicfilmmakers.com is our platform where new voices meet the established filmmaking culture and industry in Norway.

Here's the thing. Norway just won its first Oscar. Sentimental Value took home Best International Feature at the 98th Academy Awards. Nine nominations. Golden Bear in Berlin. Grand Prix in Cannes. The head of the Norwegian Film Institute called it a historic moment and said Norway has long been the underdog compared to Sweden and Denmark. The government now spends over a billion NOK a year on film support. People are calling it a golden age.

But here's what we kept noticing. We work in silos. Closed groups connected to each other by word of mouth. The institutions fund films. Festivals screen them. Industry markets pitch them. The NFI itself has said they want more new voices, more perspectives, more diversity in who gets to tell stories. Nordisk Film & TV Fond has said they're committed to creating more opportunities for young filmmakers struggling to find a place in the Nordic industries. Everyone agrees new voices matter. But where do those voices actually get heard before they've made it through the system?

That's the gap. There's no grassroots platform where the community itself speaks. Where filmmakers at every level get visibility and context. Where you can read about someone making their first short in Bergen alongside an interview with someone who just premiered at Cannes. That's what we want to build.

We say Nordic because we are Nordic, in the sense that this isn't just Oslo or Bergen. This site will focus on voices from across Norway, with international ambition.

But we're not naive. We start where our impact is right now. Local. Oslo and Bergen. Building outward from there. Finding new collaborations, new voices, and showcasing the people making films in this country to the world.

Be local, think international.

We'll still stay rooted through Instagram, with @oslofilmmakers and @bergenfilmmakers. That's our core. Our drive. Slowly building the Discord too.

But not everyone is on Discord. And not everything fits in an Instagram post. So this platform grew out of a simple idea: what if we had an editorial site that also works as a community page? Where we curate and create content for you, the reader, in this same low-key, conversational tone. Not bound by geography, but an open invitation to see what's happening across the filmmaking community in Norway.

We're not here to compete with the established journalistic voices. We want to be a voice that's in closer conversation with you, and that gives you a platform too.

What you'll find here

Think of it as community voices meeting editorial context. The tone is conversational and intimate, focused on people and their filmmaking. But it's not just an open mic. We curate. We pick out what matters, what deserves attention, and what you should know about.

That means spotlights on filmmakers (already familiar from our Instagram), alongside new content you'll only find here:

  • Reflections and essays written by you, the community. Your experience, your take, your voice.

  • Curated films you need to watch again, and new ones you need to watch right now.

  • Conversations with people in the community about what they're making and why.

  • Interviews with established industry people about how they got in and what they're working on.

You bring the stories. We help shape how they're told and where they're seen.

Globally, the indie film world is shifting. Filmmakers are building careers through communities, not just festivals. The discovery happens in niche spaces, in conversations, in the places where people actually find each other. Norway's film scene is at its peak. The platform underneath, where the next generation connects and gets visible, is what's been missing.

That's what this is.

Start submitting your ideas, and let us hear your voice.
