As a part of the Oslo Filmmakers Spotlight series, we want to highlighting voices from the community.

A short conversation

with a new voice

We had a chat with Director, Frøydis Fossli Moe — We had a chat about her craft, tenderness towards being a director, and what stories that stick.

Who are you, and what do you do?

I’m Frøydis Fossli Moe, an award-winning filmmaker from Oslo, currently graduating from the Directing Fiction course at the National Film and Television School (NFTS).

My short documentary The Final Chapter was selected for The New York Times Op-Docs and won Best Norwegian Short Documentary at the Bergen International Film Festival. My debut feature, Fucking Countryside (Fuckings bygda), received Audience Awards for Best Norwegian Fiction Film at both Oslo Pix and Oslo Fusion, and is now available on NRK and HBO Nordic. My work has screened at festivals including Nordic Panorama, Göteborg Film Festival, SFFILM, Aesthetica, BFI Future Film Festival, Full Frame, and the Norwegian Short Film Festival. I’m currently developing my next feature, Becoming, as part of NEO, the Norwegian Film Institute’s talent programme for feature directors.

What is the latest project you worked on that you are proud of?

Me to You, a short film that recently premiered at Minimalen. It’s about two people who love each other deeply, but still can’t make it work.

It’s heartbreaking and beautiful, and I’m especially proud of the performances by Isac Calmroth and Mathilde Storm.

If your work could give the audience one feeling, what would it be?

Bittersweetness.

Life is rarely just happy or just tragic, it’s both at once. That tension, that quiet bitterness beneath love and longing, is something I’m always trying to capture in my films.

Who in Oslo should get the spotlight next, and why?

Mirjam Thorkelsdottir, without a doubt. She’s an incredibly talented and hardworking director, and the way she collaborates with her team is truly inspiring. A brilliant filmmaker and a real inspiration.

When I am shooting, I feel my methodology is in many ways the same as when I am gaffing: finding the right balance.

I started out doing theatre and commercials, and in 2019 I was cast as one of the leads in the Amanda-nominated feature film Den siste våren (Sister What Grows Where Land is Sick) by Fransicka Eliassen.
