#2: Filip Koren Færevaag, Writer/Director

The most recent project I have written and directed is The Remaining Ones, which won awards at the Beverly Hills Film Festival and the Nordic International Film Festival in the United States. It is a project I’m particularly proud of.

We had a chat with Filip Koren Færevaag. He is a writer and director based in Oslo, with a background in both storytelling and on-set work in the art department. We talked about growing up around storytelling, observing large-scale filmmaking up close, and his interest in complex, melancholic characters that leave audiences with mixed emotions.

Who are you, and what do you do?

My name is Filip Koren, and I am a writer and director based in Oslo. I started writing short stories as a child, inspired by my grandmother, who is an author and has written 264 books. Growing up around her work gave me an early understanding of storytelling and sparked my own desire to create.

For the past six years, I have also worked in the Norwegian film industry, primarily in the art department and as a production assistant.

What is the latest project you worked on that you are proud of?

The most recent project I worked on was in the art department on Sentimental Value. Being part of that production gave me valuable insight into large-scale storytelling and deepened my understanding of how visual and narrative elements interact. It was also inspiring to observe Joachim Trier’s collaborative approach to directing and the space he gives actors to explore their performances.

After screenings, audience members often approach me not to comment on the visuals, the score, or the craft, but to share personal reflections the film sparked in them. Knowing that a story can strike a nerve and encourage that kind of introspection is one of the most meaningful experiences I can have as a writer and director.

If your work could give the audience one feeling, what would it be?

I’m drawn to dysfunctional, melancholic characters. I’m interested in complex protagonists, characters who aren’t always easy to root for, but who feel human and real.

I want the audience to sit with mixed emotions, to feel both discomfort and recognition.

Who in Oslo should get the spotlight next, and why?

Trim Balaj deserves the spotlight. He is a highly versatile actor with impressive range. He played the lead in Døde menn går på ski and has appeared in several strong short films, including Adrian Antonsen’s upcoming dark comedy Gratulerer med bruddet. Trim brings authenticity to his performances and has a sharp sense of comedic timing that makes his work both believable and engaging.
